The Roland-ED SC-8820 is a General MIDI 2 and Roland GS synthesizer in the Sound Canvas series, released by Roland in 1999, alongside the more powerful SC-8850. The SC-8820 is essentially a simplified SC-8850, designed to be mostly compatible with it, but with less waveforms (so not sounding identical), half the number of parts, half the maximum polyphony, and no display or panel controls. Like the SC-8850, it is an upgrade relative to the Roland SC-88 Pro, though as it lacks a display or controls, it is perhaps better compared to the SC-88ST Pro.

The Roland-ED SC-D70, released in 2000, improves on the SC-8820 by adding digital audio and USB audio interface features.

Roland Sound Canvas VA, released in 2015, is a VST instrument based on the SC-8820. This version was first released standalone, then included with the Roland Cloud subscription service. This iteration is further limited to only 16 parts. This was discontinued on the 1st of September 2024, where it was officially no longer available for purchase.

Quirks
The SC-8820 and its variants (e.g., SK-500, SC-D70, and SOUND Canvas VA) have some quirks:

* When panning is set to random and a note is interrupted by another note (e.g., with Mono mode enabled), the new note's panning will inherit that of the previous note instead of being randomized. This issue does not occur in the SC-88 Pro and earlier models.

* When receiving a "Reset All Controllers" (CC#121) control change, the SC-8820 and its variants do not reset NRPN controllers. This issue does not occur in the SOUND Canvas VA, SC-88 Pro, and earlier models.

When panning is set to random and a note is interrupted by another note (e.g., with Mono mode enabled), the new note's panning will inherit that of the previous note instead of being randomized. This issue does not occur in the SC-88 Pro and earlier models.

When receiving a "Reset All Controllers" (CC#121) control change, the SC-8820 and its variants do not reset NRPN controllers. This issue does not occur in the Sound Canvas VA, SC-88 Pro, and earlier models.

TMIDI Player is a popular freeware MIDI player application for Windows, created by fummy. It is notable for its visualizer.

Configuration
Source and Target Sound Modules
The "MIDI Option"/"MIDI Setting" dialog has an "Emulating" tab, where you can choose the "Source Sound Module" and "Target Sound Module". These are the most important settings in TMIDI Player, so set them carefully!

* "Source Sound Module" can be set to the sound module you are using with TMIDI. This option is only used for the emulation feature (see below). If you don't want to use emulation, set it to "Emulation OFF".
* "Target Sound Module" should be set to the type of sound module the MIDI files you're playing were written for. This option is used both for emulation and to control the visualization. The visualization is based on how TMIDI Player thinks this module will interpret the MIDI data, so it should be set to something appropriate for the MIDI files you're playing. If it's something inappropriate, the instrument names may be wrong or missing. For example, you probably want to select a Sound Canvas model if you're playing GS MIDI files.
* "Auto detect target module" does what it sounds like, but it doesn't always work. So it's important to set the "Target Sound Module" setting to a sensible default.

Emulation
TMIDI Player features an "Emulation" feature which attempts to translate certain MIDI events designed for one sound module to work better on a different sound module. This may be useful, but it might also do more harm than good, depending on if it's configured right and the particular song. Bear in mind that emulation is not a common feature of MIDI player software, so using it may produce different results to other MIDI players, and many DTM modules have built-in emulation features of their own (e.g. TG300B mode).

It can be disabled either by setting "Source Sound Module" to "Emulation OFF", or by using the "Stop Emulating" option in the "Option" menu.

Visuals
The "Visual Option" dialog has an "LCD" tab where you can select the background color for TMIDI Player's simulated LCD screen. The "Auto Switch Back Light" feature is nice, this will make it use MU green for Yamaha XG and Sound Canvas orange for Roland GS. Of course, this relies on the "Target Sound Module" being correctly detected.

Tips
* Click "NRPN" at the top-right during playback to switch to a view of the NRPN-controlled parameters for all the channels (ADSR envelope and filter edits, etc).
* You can click on the number of a channel ("A01", "A02" etc) to silence it.
* You can change the instrument and map by right clicking or left clicking the mouse (right click is -, left click is +).
* TMIDI Player can also solo instruments by double clicking the channel. Right click on the mouse will restore every muted channel.

Bugs
* TMIDI Player sometimes struggles with long pathnames. If it refuses to open a file, try renaming it to a shorter name, and if that doesn't work, put it in a folder in the root of your drive (e.g. "C:\Cool MIDIs\whatever.mid" rather than "C:\Documents and Settings\Firstname Lastname\Downloads\This pathname is really long.mid").
* TMIDI Player sometimes stops showing any files in the Open dialog. Type "*.*" (without the quotes) and press Enter, this will make it show files again.
* TMIDI Player will sometimes make the notes hold really suddenly even though sustain isn't used. A fix is to stop and play the MIDI.
The Roland-ED SC-D70 is a Roland GS and General MIDI 2 sound module in the Sound Canvas series. It is essentially a variant of the Roland-ED SC-8820 that adds more panel controls, digital audio outputs, and USB audio interface (stereo 24-bit 48kHz) capabilities. The USB audio features allow capturing one of the audio inputs, the MIDI synthesis engine output, or both at the same time (mixed together); a separate audio interface is not necessary for recording the output of the SC-D70 with a computer. Unlike the SC-8820, it does not feature Serial MIDI, only USB and MIDI DIN.
The XG Plug-in System, is a system developed by Yamaha for expanding Yamaha XG tone generators. Yamaha produced a series of "plug-in boards" (expansion boards) for this system. Unlike some other expansion board systems (e.g. the Roland SR-JV80 series), these boards do not just add new sounds, but contain an entire synthesis or effects engine on a board, thus potentially providing more polyphony or additional capabilities to their host device. Korg also produced a similar product in their EXB lineup with the EXB-MOSS board.

Closely related is Yamaha's Modular Synthesis Plug-in System, which uses the same connectors. Exactly how that differs is unclear; the MU100 and MU128 manuals only cover the XG Plug-in System, whereas the MU1000 manual mentions both, without explaining the difference.

Some of the earlier PLG100 boards include unpopulated Waveblaster headers, with unused pads for the necessary supporting circuitry, suggesting that the exact implementation of this system was not a certainty at first.

The PLG100 and PLG150 series board differ in one primary sense: the later 150 series typically include onboard writable memory for user-defined presets, while the earlier 100 series do not. This difference is only relevant for the more studio-oriented host devices, such as the S-series keyboards and MOTIF line, as the MU-series devices offer no facility to write to this memory. There is no issue with PLG150 compatibility for XG devices, they simply cannot utilize this particular aspect of the boards.

The Yamaha MU100 and MU100R are the first modules in the Yamaha MU series to support the system.

Boards
In total, 12 of the Yamaha PLG series plug-in boards were produced, these included:

The Yamaha MU series is a line of Yamaha XG and General MIDI sound modules made by Yamaha starting in 1994. They introduced Yamaha's XG format and competed against the Roland Sound Canvas series among others.

Most MU series devices feature not only XG support, but also unofficial Roland GS support via the TG300B mode, and unofficial partial Roland CM-64 compatibility via the mode.

The MU series was not Yamaha's first attempt at General MIDI sound modules; the MU series was preceded by the Yamaha TG100 and TG300, and it inherits some of their features, but not their appearance or form factor.

Models
Overview and history
Desktop (half-rack) modules:

* Yamaha MU80 (1994), first MU module and first XG module
* Yamaha MU50 (1995), cheaper version of the MU80 supporting only 16 parts and without the A/D inputs
* Yamaha MU90 (1996), improved MU80 with more presets (especially drumkits) and two insertion multi-effect units instead of a distortion effect unit
* Yamaha MU100 (1997), improved MU90 with almost twice as many presets, XG Plug-in System expansion support, and new per-part EQ support
* Yamaha MU128 (1998), double-height MU100 with 64 parts, 128 polyphony and three plug-in slots; supports General MIDI 2 with a software upgrade
* Yamaha MU1000 and MU2000 (1999), the most powerful models, released only in Japan, with 4 insert effect units, General MIDI 2, and for the MU2000 only, sampling features and a SmartMedia card slot
* Yamaha MU500 (2000), final model in the MU series; only 64 polyphony and lacks the screen and A/D input, but has the same set of presets as the MU1000 and MU2000

Full-rack modules:

* Yamaha MU90R, full-rack version of the MU90 with individual audio outputs
* Yamaha MU100R (1997), full-rack version of the MU100 with individual audio outputs and two pre-installed plug-in cards

Portable (battery-powered) models:

* Yamaha MU5 (1994), first portable model and only MU series model to not support XG, with tone generation more similar to the TG100
* Yamaha MU10
* Yamaha MU15 (1998), successor to the MU5 that supports XG

(TODO: More notable models?)

Comparison of major desktop modules
The following table compares the main desktop modules representing each generation/level of capability. Each module may have some other variants, please see each's page for more info. The MU50 is considered the baseline for XG support; many devices with the XG logo have the same capabilities as the MU50's XG mode.

The MU2000 also features sampling and sequencing functions, not present on any other model (including the MU1000).

<!-- This table is based mostly on the infoboxes in the respective articles, please keep it in sync! -->
! Reverb<br>
}}
The Yamaha MU100 and Yamaha MU100R are Yamaha XG and General MIDI sound modules in the Yamaha MU series introduced by Yamaha in 1997.

The MU100 and MU100R improve upon the preceding MU90 and MU90R by almost doubling the number of preset normal XG instruments, and adding a further 16 drumkits, more effect types, and per-part EQ (complementing the existing global EQ). They also introduce the XG Plug-in System of optional expansion boards, which can add additional types of synthesis or effects to the synth.

Because the MU100 and MU100R overhaul the basic set of XG sounds, they also introduce a "voice map" concept that allows switching between "MU Basic" (MU50/MU80/MU90) and "MU100Native" versions of GM1/"capital voice" instruments, improving compatibility with old song data. This is similar to the "sound map" concept on the Roland SC-88 and later. MIDI data for the MU100 and MU100R can specifically request the "Native" and "Basic" versions of GM1 instruments by using the Bank Select LSB values 126 and 127 respectively.
As with their immediate predecessors, the MU100 is a half-width desktop module, whereas the MU100R is a full-width rack-mount version. There are three main additions in the MU100R versus the MU100:

* The MU100R has additional audio outputs that parts can be individually routed to.
* The MU100R has two plug-in board connectors (so two plug-in boards can be installed), whereas the MU100 only has one.
* The MU100R in its factory configuration has the PLG100-VH (vocal harmony effect) and PLG100-VL (virtual analog synthesis) plug-in boards pre-installed, unlike the MU100. Although the manual documents these as if they are an integral part of the unit, these boards can be removed or replaced with other plug-ins, so it is unfortunately not certain that a MU100R bought used will still have these.

* Yamaha MU128 (1998), double-height MU100 with 64 parts, 128 polyphony and three plug-in slots; supports General MIDI 2 with a software upgrade

* Yamaha MU10

! Reverb<br>
}}
The Yamaha MU1000 and Yamaha MU2000 are Yamaha XG and General MIDI sound modules in the Yamaha MU series introduced by Yamaha in 1999. Unlike previous modules in the series, these were released only in Japan, so there is no official English documentation.

The MU1000 and MU2000 improve upon the MU128 by adding USB, optical digital audio output, more presets (especially drumkits), doubling the number of insert effect units, and greatly increasing the number of effect types. The MU2000 also adds a SmartMedia card slot and sampling functions, which are not present in the MU1000.

A software upgrade was released which give the devices 'EX' or expanded status, as reflected on the LCD when the device starts up. Maybe most significantly, official Roland GS support was added, replacing the TG300B mode (which was Yamaha's unofficial GS support) it also adds 19 new insert effects and new A/D input presets. Additionally, more digital audio output controls were introduced, allowing for the A/D input to pass directly to the optical output, with a mix mode for the digital output. A three-stage gain setting was added for the digital output (0, +6, +12) and received MIDI parameters were added and modified to allow for control of the expanded digital mixing options.

Later models which released with the upgrade have GS branding printed in the previously empty space below 'Plug for XG'.'GS' also supplanted the TG300B text at the bottom right of the display, below 'XG'.
(TODO: Does the GS rebrand change anything? It has been said online that the difference was dramatic, with samples being changed to achieve this, need to confirm that.)

The MU2000 is the most powerful model in the MU series. The subsequent MU500 has less features, but is more compact.
