The Kawai GMega is a General MIDI desktop sound module released by Kawai in 1993.
The GMega has three different sound banks to choose from called GM (General MIDI), SP (MT-32), and USER. Each bank consists of 128 tones, 128 percussion sounds, and 7 drum kits. The USER bank is a duplicate of the GM bank by default. The GMega does not come pre-loaded with original sounds independent from GM and MT-32 compliant tones with the exception of patches 124-128 in the SP bank called "NewSyn1" - "NewSyn5".
Of the 128 tones in a bank, 64 of them are Single tones, and 64 are Double tones, totaling 192 Singles per bank. A Single tone cannot be converted into a Double tone or vice-versa, but the order of tones can be changed through the Single Edit/COPY menu.
In Section Edit mode, any of the GMega's 32 channels can be assigned to any MIDI channel with customized parameters including key ranges, tuning, and offsets for filter, attack, and release time, thus making the GMega suitable as a performance synth. The GMega does not store performance presets, however Section data can be dumped and re-loaded as System Exclusive data.
