C/M mode ("Computer Music" mode[1]) is a feature on some Yamaha XG devices (especially the Yamaha MU series) and Yamaha TG-series devices[2] that provides unofficial Roland CM-64[2] (Roland CM-32L/Roland MT-32 and Roland CM-32P) compatibility.
In the TG100 reference manual, Yamaha claims it provides "semi-compatibility for songs recorded using a CM-64 sound module",[2] whereas later manuals avoid outright stating what device the mode is intended to be compatible with, instead vaguely referring to "computer music".[3][4]
Yamaha do not document what CM-64 features are supported beyond the list of patches. The mode does not provide full compatibility with the original devices, just similar instrument and drum sounds.
There is no equivalent mode for Roland GS devices. However, the Roland SC-55 and many (but not all) other GS devices have CM-64 compatibility banks accessible with a Bank Select, and some SC series modules have a button combination that will automatically configure all the parts for CM-64 compatibility. The SC-55's CM-64 compatibility banks are also supported in Yamaha's TG300B mode.
