The Yamaha MU90 and Yamaha MU90R are Yamaha XG and General MIDI sound modules in the Yamaha MU series introduced by Yamaha in 1996. The MU90 is a half-width desktop module like previous MU series models, whereas the MU90R is a full-width rack-mount version; the feature set is almost identical, except that the MU90R has additional audio outputs that parts can be individually routed to.
The MU90 and MU90R improve upon the preceding MU80 by adding 9 new drumkits, 49 new normal instruments, adding a second insert effect unit, and greatly improving the variety of insert effect types (the MU80's insert effect unit was limited to distortion, overdrive and 3-band EQ).
